The Marina Capital of Ireland

Known as Ireland's Hidden Heartlands, there are many perhaps lesser-known counties in the heart of Ireland that would enrich any tourist's trip to the country. While these areas may not boast coastal views, they are beautiful, thriving, and historic in their own right, with strong local pride that manifests itself in a strong cultural scene full of festivals and creative vigor.

A town that best encapsulates the qualities of landlocked Ireland is Carrick on Shannon in Co Leitrim. Perched on the River Shannon - Ireland's longest river - the west of Ireland town is known as 'the marina capital of Ireland', owing to the popularity of its waterways for recreational boat trips and fishing.

County Leitrim lies in the north of Ireland. The town of Carrick-on-Shannon, a river boating hub, has many 19th-century buildings. These include tiny Costello Memorial Chapel and St. George’s Church, home to a heritage centre. The old courthouse houses the Dock, an arts and performance venue. Slightly north, Leitrim village marks one end of the Shannon–Erne Waterway, which crosses the entire county. ― Google
