The St. Patrick’s Day Tradition That Most Tourists Don’t Know About
Most people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with parades, pints, and plenty of craic, but there’s an old tradition that even many visitors to Ireland have never heard of—“Drowning the Shamrock.” At the end of the night, after the final round of drinks, a fresh shamrock is dropped into the last glass—usually whiskey or stout. The drinker then makes a toast to Ireland, downs the drink in one go, and either swallows the shamrock or tosses it over their left shoulder for luck.
This centuries-old custom was once widely practised across Ireland, believed to bring good fortune and prosperity for the year ahead. While it has faded in many places, it’s still honoured in traditional Irish pubs, especially in towns like Galway, Cork, and parts of County Clare. So, if you’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year, why not revive an old tradition? Raise a glass, drop in a shamrock, and toast to another year of Irish luck and heritage.
