What happened at Tully Castle?

There’s a saying that “you can’t have Christmas without a few fireworks”, but no one expected the kind of show at Tully Castle on Christmas Eve 1641. The castle, formerly owned by Sir John Hume until then, was attacked and burned to the ground by Rory Maguire and his men, with all its inhabitants massacred in the process. Talk about a Christmas surprise – and one nobody wanted to receive! With its intimidating bawn, Tully Castle was considered a powerful stronghold, so it’s no wonder that locals still talk in hushed tones of the dreaded incident even today. Needless to say, the castle has never been lived in again since then.
