Maybe it is possible to make Guinness at home..
Here is how the story unfolded:
Our friends at the Irish Craic posted the following this morning.
And the following recipe was suggested by Ed Whiteside, one of our loyal members.
Home Made Guinness
Ingredients:
- 4 cups of water
- 1 pound of barley malt
- 1/2 pound of roasted barley
- 1/2 ounce of hops
- 1/2 ounce of yeast
Instructions:
1. Heat the water in a large pot over medium heat until it reaches 160°F.
2. Add the barley malt and roasted barley to the water, stirring well to combine.
3. Continue to heat the mixture, maintaining a temperature of 150-160°F, for 1-2 hours. This process is called mashing and will extract the sugars from the grains.
4. Remove the pot from heat and strain out the grains, reserving the liquid (now called wort) in a separate container.
5. Bring the wort to a boil and add the hops. Boil for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
6. After the hour is up, remove the pot from the heat and let it cool to around 70°F.
7. Add the yeast to the cooled wort and let it ferment for about a week.
8. Transfer the fermented beer to bottles or a keg, allowing it to carbonate for another week before enjoying your homemade Guinness.
Mmm, what do you think? We think it might be advisable to get some expert advice before trying this at home.
On second thoughts, why not just support your local pub?
