In a twist that underscores both the challenges and the charm of rural Irish life, Gardaí in County Kerry are investigating the theft of up to 60 sheep on Mount Brandon. The incident has not only highlighted the plight of local farmers but also brought attention to the distinctive and endearing Kerry accent, which has prompted the need for subtitles in recent news coverage.
One of the affected farmers, Mikey Joe O'Shea, is offering a reward for any information leading to the return of his missing ewes, which are valued at thousands of euros. O'Shea described the sheep as marked with red and blue dashes, making them easily identifiable.
A Shocking Discovery
Last Saturday, Mikey Joe O'Shea brought his flock of Scotch sheep down from the mountain commonage in preparation for lambing season. To his dismay, he discovered that over 50 sheep were missing. After accounting for natural losses and strays, O'Shea is convinced that at least 45 sheep were stolen, likely under the cover of night.
"Possibly at night, there’d be a full moon there up all night and then sure, it’d be bright out. Now, could anyone walk up in the mountains with no lights on?" O'Shea pondered. His frustration is palpable as he recalls the missing sheep, emphasizing their significant monetary value.
Neighbors Affected Too
Mikey's neighbor has also fallen victim to the sheep rustlers, missing about ten ewes himself. He describes the ease with which the thefts could be carried out: "It's not all that difficult. All you have to do is have a good dog, go at night, some moonshine night, just put the dog around them, put them on a trailer or walk 'em. And then, probably somebody else to pick 'em up. Whoever is doing it knows what he's doing."
Community's Plea for Action
The thefts have sparked outrage and concern among the local farming community. Farmers are calling for increased vigilance and support from the authorities to prevent further incidents. The distinctive Kerry accent, captured in the interviews, has added a unique dimension to the story, drawing widespread attention and empathy.
The investigation continues, and the hope is that the stolen sheep will be returned to their rightful owners. In the meantime, the local farmers remain vigilant, united in their determination to protect their livelihoods from further harm.
